Kuwaiti Professor accuses Jews of tampering with Koran

The Jerusalem Post
Michael Freund - Sep. 20, 2004

A leading Kuwaiti religious scholar has accused Jews of ‘manipulating’ the text of the Koran by deleting various passages and then distributing the revised versions to unsuspecting Muslims.

"Jews have been plotting against Muslims using various means," said Dr Mohammad Abdulrazek Al-Tabtabaei, Dean of the College of Sharia and Islamic Studies at Kuwait University. "They did not stop until they reached the point where they have been damaging the holy book by changing and deleting verses with the aim of hiding the truth," he said, according to a report in the Kuwaiti Arab Times newspaper.

At-Tabtabaei asserted that an unidentified Jewish group has expunged some 50 verses from the Koran, all of which relate to Jews, and is now seeking to distribute the modified volumes via the Internet.

"Any person who comes across such a copy of the Koran and discovers the alterations should immediately tear and burn it," he said.

Verse No 1

Qur'an Chapter 2: Al-Baqara (The Cow) Verse 75

Ahmed Raza Khan: Mohammed Aqib Qadri: So O Muslims, do you wish for the Jews to accept faith in you whereas a group of them used to listen to the Words of Allah, and then after having understood it, purposely changed it?

Yusuf Ali: Can ye (o ye men of Faith) entertain the hope that they will believe in you?- Seeing that a party of them heard the Word of Allah, and perverted it knowingly after they understood it.

Pickthal: Have ye any hope that they will be true to you when a party of them used to listen to the word of Allah, then used to change it, after they had understood it, knowingly?

Verse No 2

Qur'an Chapter 2: Al-Baqara (The Cow) Verse 79

Ahmed Raza Khan: Mohammed Aqib Qadri: Therefore woe is to those who write the Book with their hands; and they then claim, "This is from Allah" in order to gain an abject (worldly) price for it; therefore woe to them for what their hands have written, and woe to them for what they earn with it.

Yusuf Ali: Then woe to those who write the Book with their own hands, and then say:"This is from Allah," to traffic with it for miserable price!- Woe to them for what their hands do write, and for the gain they make thereby.

Pickthal: Therefore woe be unto those who write the Scripture with their hands and then say, "This is from Allah," that they may purchase a small gain therewith. Woe unto them for that their hands have written, and woe unto them for that they earn thereby.

Verse No 3

M.H. Shakir 4.46 Of those who are Jews (there are those who) alter words from their places and say: We have heard and we disobey and: Hear, may you not be made to hear! and: Raina, distorting (the word) with their tongues and taunting about religion; and if they had said (instead): We have heard and we obey, and hearken, and unzurna it would have been better for them and more upright; but Allah has cursed them on account of their unbelief, so they do not believe but a little.

Maulvi Sher Ali: There were some among the Jews who pervert words from their proper places. And they say, "We hear and we disobey" and "hear us and may God's Word never be heard by you", and they say, ‘Ra'ina’. They say all this twisting with their tongues and seeking to injure the Faith. And if they had said, "We hear and we obey", and "hear thou", and ‘Unzurna’, it would have been better for them and more upright. But Allah has cursed them for their disbelief; so they believe but little.

Marmaduke Pickthall: Some of those who are Jews change words from their context and say: "We hear and disobey; hear thou as one who heareth not" and "Listen to us!" distorting with their tongues and slandering religion. If they had said: "We hear and we obey: hear thou, and look at us" it had been better for them, and more upright. But Allah hath cursed them for their disbelief, so they believe not, save a few.

Verse No 4

M.H. Shakir 5.13 But on account of their breaking their covenant We cursed them and made their hearts hard; they altered the words from their places and they neglected a portion of what they were reminded of; and you shall always discover treachery in them excepting a few of them; so pardon them and turn away; surely Allah loves those who do good (to others).

Maulvi Sher Ali: So, because of their breaking of the covenant, WE have cursed them and have hardened their hearts. They pervert the words from their proper places and have forgotten a good part of that with which they were exhorted. And thou wilt not cease to discover treachery on their part, except a few of them. So pardon them and show forbearance. Surely Allah loves those who do good to others.

Marmaduke Pickthall: And because of their breaking their covenant, We have cursed them and made hard their hearts. They change words from their context and forget a part of that whereof they were admonished. Thou wilt not cease to discover treachery from all save a few of them. But bear with them and pardon them. Lo! Allah loveth the kindly.

Verse No 5

M.H. Shakir: 5.41 O Apostle! let not those grieve you who strive together in hastening to unbelief from among those who say with their mouths: We believe, and their hearts do not believe, and from among those who are Jews; they are listeners for the sake of a lie, listeners for another people who have not come to you; they alter the words from their places, saying: If you are given this, take it, and if you are not given this, be cautious; and as for him whose temptation Allah desires, you cannot control anything for him with Allah. Those are they for whom Allah does not desire that He should purify their hearts; they shall have disgrace in this world, and they shall have a grievous chastisement in the hereafter.

Maulvi Sher Ali: O Messenger ! let not those grieve thee who hasten to fall into disbelief - those who say with their mouths, "We believe", but their hearts believe not. And among the Jews too are those who would fondly listen to any lie - who listen for conveying it to other people who have not come to thee. They pervert words after their being put in their right places; and say, "If you are given this, then accept it, but if you are not given this, then keep away from it." And as for him whom Allah desires to try, thou shalt not avail him aught against Allah. These are they whose hearts Allah has not been pleased to purify; they shal" have disgrace in this world, and in the Hereafter they shall have a severe punishment.

Marmaduke Pickthall: O Messenger! Let not them grieve thee who vie one with another in the race to disbelief, of such as say with their mouths: "We believe," but their hearts believe not, and of the Jews: listeners for the sake of falsehood, listeners on behalf of other folk who come not unto thee, changing words from their context and saying: If this be given unto you, receive it, but if this be not given unto you, then beware! He whom Allah doometh unto sin, thou (by thine efforts) wilt avail him naught against Allah. Those are they for whom the Will of Allah is that He cleanse not their hearts. Theirs in the...

Verse No 6

Qur’an Chapter 6: Al-Anam (Cattle, Livestock) Verse 91

6:91 wa maa qadarul-laaha Haq-qa qadrihii idh qaaluu maa anzalal-laahu ‘Alaa basharim min shay’* qul man anzalal kitaabal-ladhiy jaa-a bihii muusaa nuuraw wa hudal lin-naasi taj’Aluunahuu qaraaTiysa tubduunahaa wa tukhfuuna kathiyraa* wa ‘Ul-limtum maa lam ta’Ålamuu antum wa laa aabaaukum* qulil-laah* thum-ma dharhum fiy khawDihim yal’Abuun Ahmed Raza Khan: Mohammed Aqib Qadri’: And they (the Jews) did not realise (or appreciate) the importance of Allah as was required when they said, "Allah has not sent down anything upon any human being"; say, "Who has sent down the Book which Moosa brought, a light and guidance for mankind, which you have divided into different papers, some which you show and hide most of them? And (by which) you are taught what you did not know nor did your forefathers?" Say, ‘Allah’ - then leave them playing in their indecency.

Yusuf Ali: No just estimate of Allah do they make when they say: "Nothing doth Allah send down to man (by way of revelation)" Say: "Who then sent down the Book which Moses brought?- a light and guidance to man: But ye make it into (separate) sheets for show, while ye conceal much (of its contents): therein were ye taught that which ye knew not- neither ye nor your fathers." Say: "Allah (sent it down)": Then leave them to plunge in vain discourse and trifling.

Pickthal: And they measure not the power of Allah its true measure when they say: Allah hath naught revealed unto a human being. Say (unto the Jews who speak thus): Who revealed the Book which Moses brought, a light and guidance for mankind, which ye have put on parchments which ye show, but ye hide much (thereof), and (by which) ye were taught that which ye knew not yourselves nor (did) your fathers (know it)? Say: Allah. Then leave them to their play of cavilling.
